DIY Bug Spray

Mosquitoes are awful in Louisville during the summer!  I personally don't like to use chemicals like Deet since I have sensitive skin so I make my own bug spray with essential oils.

I prefer making my own because I can safely spray it on my face and the essential oils smell great! It's also great for spraying on bug bites to help stop itching and soothe skin.

Here is a recipe that I have used. This allows you to make it in any quantity so you can use whatever spray bottle you have handy.

  • 2 parts distilled water
  • 1 part witch hazel
  • essential oils

You can use any combination of these essential oils that you like. Citronella, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Rosemary, Tea Tree.

I personally use about 5 drops of Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint and Tea Tree.

There are a lot of great recipes on the internet too like this one from Back to Her Roots.

If you are interested in learning more about essential oils and purchasing some for yourself talk to Heather Brandt. She was one of the vendors at our Grand Opening Wellness Fair and is very knowledgeable about essential oils.  You can purchase Young Living essential oils through her.
