My name is Kyle (aka Seoul Krusher or “Krush”), and I’m 34 years old, a wife and a mother of two amazing kids (shout out to Grant, Ayden and Harbin). I started my BAREfit adventure a little over a year ago with my friend and teammate, Bo, after hearing about an alternative workout from skaters with the Derby City Roller Girls (DCRG).
Growing up I was always athletic, and I swam competitively in high school and college. After college, life kind of got in the way and I stopped working out regularly. After my youngest was born I decided to do something for me and joined the DCRG recreational league, which provides skills and training to become a roller derby skater (if you are interested let me know, we are always recruiting). I started looking outside of my weekly practices to find other ways to become stronger. Some of the official DCRG members were posting “check ins” online at BAREfit. After finding out it was close to my home I decided to give it a try. I went to my first workout in early May 2016.
My first workout was humbling, hard and a lot of fun. I had thought all those years of swimming had kept me in good shape, but I was wrong. After the first workout I was SO sore. My legs were like jelly, I couldn’t walk up or down stairs without wincing, and it hurt to lift my arms up. I didn’t know if I could go back, and then I did and I haven’t looked back.
I have never been a gym person - repetitive movements and running on a treadmill are not for me. BAREfit workouts are constantly changing and I have never done the same workout twice. I love that I can add more weight, or alter the workout to fit me. I personally love the feeling of sore muscles after a good workout, and BAREfit never disappoints. The workouts are challenging and always different. The short sets keep you moving, while also engaging different muscles. I have never felt so strong in my life. I don't have to bring a stroller when I'm out with the kids, because I can dual carry my kids and carry them for longer periods of time. BAREfit has also helped me improve my roller derby game. It's harder to move me out of the way, I use my lower body strength to block opposing skaters, and hit them out of bounds.
I have been attending BAREfit at least three times a week in wee early morning at 6:30 a.m. It’s now a part of my regular routine, and I look forward to the workouts and hanging with an amazing morning crew! Even this week, my legs are sore. I love that I’m constantly engaging different muscles and challenging my body.
Last October I tried out for the official DCRG team, and made it. I credit a lot of that to my BAREfit workouts. Also shout out to BAREfit for being a sponsor of the DCRG team, we love you!
