I have been with Barefit just over a year. Before I joined BAREfit I was working out at Bellarmine University (where I go to school) and Planet Fitness. Even with the two different gyms, I felt that I wasn’t getting the workout I needed and I definitely wasn’t getting the results I wanted. While I was at Planet Fitness, my girlfriend and BAREfit member, Paige McWilliams, was coming to BAREfit and invited me to come and try out a class. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. After that very class I signed up for a membership and canceled my Plant Fitness membership. I realized that I was getting a better workout in the 45 minutes I was at BAREfit than the 2 hours I would spend at my other gyms.

By taking advantage of the unlimited classes and the different programs BAREfit offers like the 21 Day Challenge, I have seen monumental success. I came into BAREfit at 245 pounds coming off of shoulder surgery that both physically and mentally held me back. With the great help of the coaches and fellow BAREfitters, I am now 189 pounds, I have no pain in my shoulder, I have been a Pescatarian for over a year, I come to BAREfit 5 days a week always wanting more and I have never been so comfortable in my body. BAREfit has truly changed my life both from a physical standpoint but also in making much more health conscious and getting me away from my computer and outside for things like hiking. I could not be happier with my decision to join BAREfit.

A profound moment didn’t lead me to BAREfit Adventure Training. I hadn’t injured myself doing something really adventurous. Actually, that same year, I dropped my membership at a local gym because I was bored with the classes, tired of just being a number and over my lack of results. Without even knowing it, BAREfit was exactly what I had been looking for.

I met Rob, and possibly Curtis, at the Flea-Off Market in September 2014. See, I can’t even remember the details of the moment that has literally changed my physical and mental wellbeing. BAREfit was doing a drawing for a gift card, and a few days later, I received a call from Rob telling me that I’d won a free month of training. I’m pretty sure I tried to talk him out of choosing me as the winner because I was no stranger to what this style of exercise entailed; I’ve sat at traffic lights and watched in amazement while those people push themselves to extremes. Later I would learn there’s a difference between BAREfit and Crossfit. I showed up for my first session and thought that I was either going to be sick or pass out by the end of it. I went full-throttle that first session, and I haven’t looked back since. I stuck with it, and while the workout didn’t get any easier, I certainly got stronger.

In January 2015, I made it my resolution to always ask for more weight. This year, I decided to always take the high road during our Whim Day workouts. The high road is the more advanced movement during a BAREfit obstacle course, which is the main part of a Whim Day workout. I’m not such a weakling anymore; I find myself looking for adventure in and out of BAREfit because not only has it made me stronger, it’s increased my confidence. I attend three Pack Workouts each week and one personal training session each month with Curtis. Our personal training sessions have been invaluable to my success. Curtis has brought out my strengths and my weaknesses. He helps me work though movements so that I get the best workout and stay safe. He has literally pushed me to my limit and encouraged me to push further.

As of March 2017, I have lost 56 pounds. I know weight is just a number and doesn’t measure how strong I am, but I weigh more than I did in my mid-twenties (I’m 35, by the way) and wear a smaller size. BAREfit has enabled me to become my strongest self. I’m pretty sure I’ll survive if ever faced with crossing a river by traversing a log or swinging by vine to the other side. BAREfit Adventure Training helps me be me, a much stronger and healthier me.

I've been coming to BAREfit for about 2 years. I started coming because after years of doing various videos for strength training I wanted to change what I was doing. I'd seen Curtis and Janae around (Curtis was usually wearing a BAREfit shirt) and asked them about it.

The results that I've had since coming to BAREfit include increased strength and agility for sure. I would also say my overall confidence to try new things and having a general "yeah I can do that probably" or "hey I'll try that" in my other outdoor adventuring and daily life activities has definitely increased based on knowing what I can do at BAREfit. Coupled with a dietary change I've lost quite a bit of weight training at BAREfit. (30 lbs so far).

I don't know if I can pick just one favorite thing because there are so many things that I love about it! One of my favorite things about BAREfit is the environment there. I really appreciate that no matter what someone's fitness level is they're always treated with the same welcoming attitude; there's no pretension for funky gym attitude there. You can always ask a question without judgement and because of the intentional smallness of the class size, you get the double whammy benefits of a fun class environment plus the benefit of having a personal trainer right there all the time.

I always appreciate that even after 2 years I'm consistently sore after a workout. It's never boring! The workouts are always varied to create a really great workout year after year. I love that the classes are thoughtfully creative in order to benefit functionality in your regular life.

It's my happy place!

My BareFit story is probably a little less typical than most. I first arrived at BareFit already in fairly good shape due to my years of experience with parkour, mobility training, and trail running. However at 5'8" and 130 lbs, nobody was mistaking me for an athelete anytime soon. I may still never be mistaken from a bodybuilder, but I have assuredly gained nearly 8 lbs of muscle weight since first coming to BareFit.

The first time I came to BareFit it was a whim day style course set up for the Grand Opening event back on May 23rd, 2015. I instantly knew it was my kind of place. The attitudes and aesthetics reminded me of working out in a good friend's unfinished basement. I had so much fun that first day that I did the workout 2.5 times plus some random goofing around on all the various items strewn about the building. Ever since then, a combination of not wanting to dissapoint Curtis by taking a micronap in a pool of my own sweat rather than push on for 15 more seconds, and Emma's tendency to come up with harder exercise variants when my own variants aren't up to her snuff have kept pushing me harder than my previous workouts ever had. It is through pushing myself harder and for longer that helped me actually gain the muscle mass I had been looking for.

Ever since first walking in to BareFit, I knew I wanted to get involved somehow. Knowing how much time I'd spend there, it would have just felt strange to not foster a deeper connection to the place. I've helped build out parts of the gym, plan out new additions, and now I'm a certified MovNat trainer and will start coaching at BAREfit this summer.
